Uganda’s Tourism

Current State and Strategy for the future

The Dictator Amin's regime, which started with the military coup of 1971, literally led to a gradual collapse of tourism (which was once the fourth largest foreign exchange earner for the country after coffee, cotton and copper). The regime became increasingly brutal to the populace, the economy, the professional and commercial cadres, big game reserves in the national parks, etc. In the latter case, the animals virtually disappeared due to excessive poaching. The tourism infrastructure and investors dwindled to nil. Only one thing remained intact which is Uganda’s natural beauty.

Recently, a Tourism Feasibility Analyst remarked that Uganda’s offer in this area "potentially has no equal in Africa". Winston Churchill in his famous book "My African Journey" written in 1907 after his tour of Africa, described Uganda as truly the Pearl of Africa.
